Loss to the USF Community

Bill Wood, SJ

Dear members of the USF community,

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the death of Fr. William Wood, SJ, who died June 29, 2014 at the age of 80 at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, CA after a long illness.

From 1969-77 Bill was a lecturer in Theology and Religious Studies and director of Campus Ministry at USF. He designed and coordinated an interdisciplinary course on world hunger, involving faculty from various departments. He was a member of the Faculty Senate, developed a master’s program in spirituality and was named as an Outstanding Educator of America. Bill left USF to become President and Jesuit Rector at Bellarmine for three years. He founded the Santa Clara Valley Coalition Against Hunger, which over time evolved into the Second Harvest Food Bank (the country’s largest). He participated in the l8 month California Food Policy Project, funded by the California Council for the Humanities in Public Policy. The study of solutions to world hunger has been the focus of his career.

From 1984 until 1991 Bill was the Executive Director of the California Catholic Conference of Bishops. He was the advisor to and spokesperson for the 25 bishops of the seven million Catholics living in the 12 (arch)dioceses of California with regard to public policy issues and relations with the various branches and offices of state government. Bill returned to USF in the mid-1990s until 2000 to serve as assistant rector/minister of the Jesuit Community and director of mission in the planning and mission office.

A full obituary may be found here. Letters of condolence may be sent to University Ministry to be forwarded to Bill's family. Please remember Bill, his family and his brother Jesuits in your thoughts and prayers at this time.

Sincerely,

Julia Dowd
